RESEARCH BIO: I'm currently completing my dissertation in Modern Language Education in the department of Language and Literacy Education. My PhD research was a year-long, multi-sited, multi-generational ethnographic case study of one Chilean-Canadian family in Alberta, in which the grandparents arrived in Canada following Pinochet's brutal coup d'etat in the 1970s, and in which the grandchildren were currently learning their heritage language (Spanish) in a Spanish-English bilingual program in school (grades 2 and 4). I wanted to understand the impact of the children's socialization into their difficult cultural knowledge at home (i.e., regarding their family's exile from Chile) on their heritage language development.
